What is tire retreading industry ? Tires from large trucks are often retreaded to extend their useful lives. Tire bodies can be retreaded several times before they are too worn. 1.Identification The body of the tire is called a casing. When the tread has worn down, a good casing can have new tread applied providing a useful tire at a much lower cost than new. 2.Function In the retreading process, the casing is buffed to remove the old tread. Then adhesive and new tread or tread rubber is applied to the casing. The tire is then cured in an oven that applies both high temperature and pressure to the tire. 3.Types There are two types of tire retreading. One has tread rubber attached to the casing then the tread pattern is formed under pressure in a mold called a precure. The other method has already formed tread affixed to the casing then the completed tire is cured. 4.Features The curing of new tread to a tire casing is called vulcanization. The tread attachment is permanent and vulcanization is the same process used to manufacture new tires. Misconceptions The truck tire tread that lies along side the highway does not come from falling apart retreads. All truck tires will lose tread if they run long enough without the correct air pressure. |
